Please note: we live in constantly changing times. Be sure to follow the latest government health advice including current restrictions in Sydney, always abide by social distancing advice, and check your hike is nearby and open before making plans!
1. Bondi to Coogee Walk
Length: 12km
Time: 3 hours
We’ll start simple with one of the most well-known hikes in Sydney; the Bondi to Coogee walk. While you might have done part of this walk before, if you start at North Bondi and go all the way to Coogee and back, it becomes quite a workout!
The good news? You’ll be rewarded by jaw-dropping views of the coastline, and you might even spot a whale or two if you linger on the hill between Bondi and Tamarama. Try to go early in the morning to avoid any crowds.
2. Two Valley Trail
Length: 13 km one way
Time: 3-4 hours
If you’re already living in the local area, you may already have been lucky enough to have used this track for short walks. But the full trail is one of the best hikes in Sydney, especially if you’re up for a challenge.
This trail is great because it’s so close to the city and suburbs, yet offers glimpses of a vast variety of birdlife, abundant plant life, and even the local flying fox colony. Bring a bottle of water, but there are also cafés available throughout the trail if you’re in need of a take-away pick-me-up along the way.
Be sure to check the NSW National Parks & Wildlife website before you visit to ensure this trail is open.
3. Narrabeen Lagoon Trail
Length: 8.5 km
Time: 2 – 2.5 hours
If you live up north and you’re keen on a lengthy hike in Sydney to while away your Sunday morning, why not try the Narrabeen Lagoon Trail? This picturesque hike is long, but it’s also almost entirely flat.
The hike wraps around the lagoon on all sides, meaning you’ll have an epic view of the water and surrounding parks. Or, if you’re sick of walking, it’s the perfect place for cycling, too. It’s also dog-friendly and has a couple of café stops along the way if you need a quick snack or a caffeine boost.
4. Taronga Zoo to Balmoral Beach
Length: 13 km return trip
Time: 3-4 hours
Looking for a hike in Sydney with epic harbour views? If so, this should be your top pick. This is one of our top hikes in Sydney because it’s so easy to access, yet the views as you trek through Chowder Bay, Georges Heights Lookout, Bradley’s Head, and Middle Head are unbeatable. Keep your camera at the ready because you’ll want to capture the harbour views, secluded beaches and tranquil bushland surrounds.
To get started, head to Taronga Zoo and nab a street park at the entrance to the zoo near the ferry. Just be sure to check the parking signs! We recommend packing a bottle of water and a snack for this one.
5. The Basin and Mackerel Circuit
Length: 7 km return trip
Time: 2-2.5 hours
If you’re up for a more adventurous hike in Sydney, this is the one for you! This trail loop isn’t a particularly difficult one, but it does involve some steep sections and some clambering across rocks, so you have to be fit and able. Be sure to time your walk carefully so that you’re not hiking across the beach section of the trail at high tide!
If you’re ready for an adventure, this is one of the few hikes in Sydney that is quiet, yet full of epic scenery and coastal views – not to mention plenty of wallabies!
Be sure to check the NSW National Parks & Wildlife website before you visit to ensure this trail is open.
