Sydney is a vibrant hub of activity, with plenty of things to do. From delicious dining to harbourside walks and enough beaches for your whole summer, Sydney really has it all, especially coming into the warmer months. We’ve picked the best activities to do in Sydney for those of all ages; from couples to families and everyone in between.
Our Top Activities to do in Sydney
Sydney welcomes over 3.7 million international visitors per year – more than in any other part of Australia, and it’s easy to see why. Our sprawling city can suit all different tastes, whether you prefer a thriving music and arts scene, a long hike with jaw-dropping scenery, a foodie tour or a relaxing day at the beach.
With international borders currently closed, now is the perfect time to see all those popular Sydney attractions that would normally get so busy during the summer months!
1. Walk across the Sydney Harbour Bridge
The Sydney Harbour Bridge is spectacular in itself, but had you ever considered walking across it? It’s one of the best free Sydney activities and, best of all, it’s very easy! The walk starts from Milson’s Point station and takes you back into the city centre in about 25 minutes. Be sure to pause and snap a photo of the sweeping views of the harbour and the Sydney Opera House.
2. Take a trip to Palm Beach
Palm Beach should top the list of fun activities to do in Sydney but it is often overlooked in favour of the famous Bondi Beach. While further away from Sydney’s centre, Palm Beach has plenty to offer. Made famous as the backdrop of Australia’s favourite TV drama, Home & Away, Palm Beach has sparkling blue water, golden sand and lots of delicious places to stop for a bite to eat. You can even hike the short distance up to Barrenjoey Lighthouse and enjoy the spectacular views from all sides from Sydney’s northernmost seaside point.
3. Spot whales at North Head
If you’re visiting Sydney from June to November, you might be lucky enough to spot a whale or two along one of the many coastal walks available. Simply catch the ferry to Manly and walk to Shelly Beach, right to the top of the stairs where this walk starts. From there, it’s an easy walk through a tranquil bush track, with plenty of lookouts for whale-spotting in between!
4. Walk amongst the Badu Mangroves
Perhaps one of the more unusual activities to do in Sydney, why not visit the Badu Mangroves within Sydney Olympic Park? This easy elevated boardwalk winds through lush mangroves, allowing you to marvel at this unique ecosystem. Try to spot local birdlife like pelicans, shorebirds and ducks and get fit along the way!
5. Dine on delicious cuisine in Chinatown
While you’ll never fall short of dining options anywhere in Sydney, Chinatown, within the city centre, is an experience in itself. Explore the night markets on a Friday night then visit one of the many tasty dumpling houses nearby. Whether you prefer delicate spices or fiery chili, Chinatown has delicious fare for everyone, making this one of the most delectable activities to do in Sydney!
6. Soak up the culture at the Art Gallery of NSW
Whether you’re an art enthusiast or you’re just looking for some of the best free activities to do in Sydney, the Art Gallery of NSW is a definite pit stop. Apart from expansive regular exhibitions, the gallery also features a range of touring artists and world-famous exhibitions.
7. Make friends with the sharks at Sea Life Sydney Aquarium
There are also a range of Sydney activities for families available, if you know where to look. The aquarium is home to over 12,000 animals. Observe the friendly dugongs and try to count rows of teeth on sharks swimming above you while you navigate through a series of spectacular underwater tunnels.
8. Stroll through the Royal Botanic Garden
The Royal Botanic Garden is one of the most interesting activities to do in Sydney, especially with kids. Pack a picnic lunch to enjoy a relaxing afternoon on the grass or visit one of the cafes available on the grounds. Explore thousands of native Australian plants and flowers and marvel at the views of the Opera House.
9. Embrace your adventurous side at Luna Park
For a Sydney activity that’s a little more daring, visit Luna Park. Embrace your inner child as you explore classic theme park rides or try your hand at winning a prize in one of the many arcade games. Enjoy lunch at the recently-renovated restaurant or sample classic theme-park food fare like candy floss, hot chips or a delicious ice cream.
While the longer days and bright spring sunshine has meant we’re all keen to explore Sydney, there are still social distancing restrictions in place. We recommend booking any venues ahead of time to avoid disappointment and maintaining social distancing.
