One of the best things about inner Sydney is its wide choice of vibrant markets. With great shopping, fresh produce and delicious food, there’s always something to discover. Whether you’re looking for biodynamic oranges, a second-hand designer dress or just a spicy satay, our local stallholders won’t let you down.
We love spending a bit of time at a market when we aren’t helping people buy and sell. Here, we’ve put together a guide to our favourites that are close to our offices in Hyde Park. Feel free to share yours, too.
Carriageworks Farmers’ Market
This is a high-quality and very dog-friendly farmers’ market. Every Saturday morning, growers from across NSW roll into town to share freshly picked produce with locals. As well as food shopping, you can tuck into steak sandwiches and many other dishes, and savour a freshly brewed coffee in the shelter of the character-filled Carriageworks arts centre.
When: Every Saturday morning 8am to 1pm
Where: Carriageworks, 245 Wilson Street, Everleigh
Glebe Markets
This Saturday morning market at the local primary school is a Sydney institution and a great place to check out new designers testing their latest creations or rummage through stalls looking for second-hand treasures, CDs and books. Live music and frequent events add to the friendly atmosphere.
When: Every Saturday 10am to 4pm
Where: Glebe Public School on Glebe Point Road, Glebe.
Surry Hills Markets
Surry Hills market is well worth wandering past if you’re here on the first Saturday of the month. Selling vintage fashion, antiques, handmade cosmetics and second-hand designer clothes, it’s a favourite of fashionistas looking for something unique. Hosted by the Surry Hills Community Centre, it has a relaxed local feel and all proceeds go towards supporting the centre’s programmes. Best of all, a changing roster of casual stallholders means every month you’ll find something new.
When: First Saturday of every month
Where: Shannon Reserve, Surry Hills
Paddington Markets
No list of inner city markets would be complete without mentioning Paddington Markets. It’s been running on iconic Oxford Street since 1973, and is as Sydney as the Opera House. Pick up something from a local designer, buy a beautiful house plant or a bunch of flowers, and sample some excellent freshly cooked dishes from the food court.
When: Saturday mornings 10am to 4pm
Where: 395-435 Oxford Street, Paddington
Chinatown Night Market
A great way to finish the week with some friends is to go for a stroll down the main drag of Chinatown, which becomes a night market every Friday. Choose from freshly cooked street food including fried squid, Malaysian roti, satay and Japanese pancakes. Or have an appetiser or two here before taking in the unmistakable atmosphere of Chinatown from one of its many restaurants.
When: From 4pm on Fridays
Where: Dixon Street, Haymarket
Sydney Sustainable Market
A more intimate (read: smaller) market than Paddington, and a good place to pick up bread, cake, fruit and veg and great coffee to go with your bacon and egg breakfast roll. This is a not-for-profit market where the sellers are also the growers, and priority is given to organic, biodynamic and low-spray produce.
Where: Taylor Square, Oxford Street
When: Saturdays 8am to 1pm
Night Noodle Market in Hyde Park
Held here in our very own Hyde Park, this lively Night Noodle Market is held every October. Be sure to pack a picnic rug and come on down. And if you want to find out more about Hyde Park, read our recent blog on it here
