Open day is looming and your home looks like a bomb hit it, but you’re all out of storage space. Let’s face it – you don’t want visitors to be hit by an avalanche of junk exploding out of a cupboard when they try to take a sneak peek inside! We know most of us have been there before, so we put together these tips on storage solutions that will elevate your spaces while stowing away the clutter.
You can never have too much storage space, but not every home is full of walk-in-wardrobes, built-ins, or cupboards in every room. Storage spaces don’t just make your life easier, they’re great for stashing the trash come open day. And, best of all, they show prospective buyers just how easy it is to utilise space within your home.
Whether you’re selling your home, downsizing, or you’d just like to stow away your excess bits and pieces, here are our favourite tips on storage solutions you can try today.
1. Clothing racks
When it comes to tips on storage, start with the items that take up the most space in your rooms. For most of us, this is our clothing! Believe it or not, freestanding clothing racks can actually save space and make your rooms look spacious.
They’re smaller than a large wardrobe, and, if you invest in a nice one, they can look extremely chic. The only caveat is that you need to keep a freestanding clothing rack tidy, as everything is out in the open!
2. Add a cart or two
A cute cart made of rattan or even in gold is very on-trend at the moment. It’s a great storage option and it can really elevate the style of your spaces. You can use a cart to store:
- Drinks, from spirit bottles to your favourite decanter
- Bathroom toiletries, toilet paper, cotton balls, and even fresh flowers
- Bedside table items
- Laundry items like towels, brushes, and pegs
3. Add shelves
Shelving is one of our favourite tips on storage, as it can store or display your most prized possessions. Plus, on-trend shelving around the home can turn your storage into a statement piece.
You can use floating shelves above the back of your door to store towels and other miscellaneous items. Or, you can add them in the living room or above your bed to display wall art, books, or ornaments. They can even become the main focal point of your spaces if you layer high-impact artworks on them. Check Pinterest for more inspiration on how to style floating shelves.
4. Slide tubs under the bed
The space under the bed is one of the most useless places in the home unless you utilise it to its full potential. If you don’t already have storage draws under the bed, add some! You can simply slide these in underneath the bed, adding labels on the end of each tub to identify its contents.
We recommend opting for storage tubs with lids, however, as the space under the bed has a habit of becoming quite dusty! If you’re using the storage every day, consider tubs with wheels to avoid scratching wooden floors or wearing down the carpet.
5. Organise your kitchen cabinets
When it comes to tips on storage, a clean and organised kitchen is a must, particularly in a compact kitchen where you need to utilise every inch of space. And if you’re planning on selling your home, you definitely don’t want visitors greeted with unpleasant bin smells or a chaotic jumble of plates, spoons, and other implements when they peek in a draw – as they inevitably will!
Grab some draw organisers to ensure each draw is neat and tidy, with everything in its place. Hooks are your new best friend when it comes to kitchen organisation. They can hold measuring spoons, graters, potato mashers, and all manner of implements in the kitchen.
Likewise, if your bin is taking up space, why not convert a draw to a bin, or even hang it on a bin holder underneath the kitchen sink? This can make your kitchen look much neater.
6. Over-the-door organisers
This isn’t a new invention, by any means, but it can be so handy! Over-the-door organisers are truly the best invention. Most of us use them for shoes, but they are suitable for a range of items, from beauty products to socks, scarves, or other accessories. You can even use them for storing kids’ toys or cords in your home office.
7. Use hidden storage
This is one of our favourite tips on storage, because not all storage has to be an eyesore! By adding stylish, yet functional pieces of furniture in your home, you can create opportunities for storage that don’t even look like storage!
Invest in furniture with added storage, such as:
- Ottomans that lift up to reveal storage
- Window seats with storage underneath
- Kitchen benches with storage
- Under-bed storage – many modern beds have drawers on the sides or on the end to store linen, books, or other miscellaneous items
