Located on the fringe of the Sydney CBD, Chippendale has a great community vibe that belies its central location. Close to the University of Technology, Notre Dame and The University of Sydney, it’s unsurprisingly a lively place thanks to its strong student population.
Chippendale is also a noted hub for art galleries and creative spaces. While it’s surrounded by busy roads, the residential streets close to Peace Park are sought after for their tranquility. With a central location, green spaces and galleries, cafes and restaurants, it’s no wonder this tiny suburb is a drawcard for professionals and even families.
What are Chippendale houses like?
The suburb of Chippendale has some beautiful heritage houses, terraces and warehouse conversions, and an abundance of apartments. Additionally, the original Old Kent brewery (first established in 1835) has now been revitalised. It offers new apartments and student housing.
Once considered a down-at-heel neighbourhood by many, this postcode is now a great choice for investors who want a safe, inner-city investment. And no shortage of tenants wanting to live here.
Things to do in Chippendale
Check out Central Park
The Old Kent Brewery has been respectfully revived to become the Central Park development. Along with new apartments, there’s a shopping mall, cafes, boutiques and more to explore.
White Rabbit gallery
This contemporary art gallery, which opened in 2009, is housed in a former Rolls Royce service depot. The vast collection of Chinese and Taiwanese contemporary artwork was all collected by the gallery’s founder, Judith Neilson. After you’ve viewed the current exhibition, visit the teahouse for tea and dumplings.
A bijou suburb measuring just 700 square metres, Chippendale has a surprising amount of parkland within easy reach. Along with Peace Park, locals love Chippendale Green, and Victoria Park is also close by.
Located within the University of Sydney, the Seymour Centre has something for everyone. The annual programme includes experimental dance, cabaret, stand-up comedy and Shakespeare, and much more.
Dining out in Chippendale
Being in the university precinct means lots of good-value eateries to discover. Here are some other, more upmarket venues.
Enjoy hawker style dining at Kopi-Tiam Spice Alley on Kensington Street. There are six eateries to choose from, and then you can enjoy your food under lanterns in this atmospheric laneway. This laid-back dining experience comes with a recommendation from Vogue as one of Sydney’s top date nights.
Old Clare Hotel
The revived Old Clare Hotel has updated its food offerings as much as its beautifully refurbished rooms. With three restaurants to choose from, spanning East Mediterranean cuisine, fine dining and relaxed cafe fare, it has every appetite and mood covered.
It wouldn’t be Sydney without a superb bakery, and Brickfields doesn’t disappoint. Great for brunch, with croissants, bacon sandwiches and Mecca coffee.
LP’s Quality Meats
Meat lovers will be in heaven here, with all kinds of succulent carnivorous dishes on offer. House-made sausages, interesting cuts of meat and liberal use of Southern Pride smoker that chef Luke Powell shipped from Tennessee keeps the customers coming back for more.
Koi Dessert Bar
This is a one-stop venue for enjoying a savoury tasting menu or indulging your sweet tooth with a five-course dessert menu of exquisite jewel-like creations. You can also order an impressive cake here or hone your skills at a cooking class.
There are no schools within this tiny suburb, however, the co-educational primary Darlington Public School is within walking distance. There are plenty of schools in the surrounding suburbs, including inner-city Sydney Boys and Sydney Girls High Schools, the Australia Performing Arts Grammar School, and Sydney International High School.
Chippendale is bordered by Ultimo, Redfern, Darlington and Camperdown, so there’s plenty to do within walking distance. Central Station is just a 15-minute walk away, and it’s a 20-minute commute to the CBD by bus. Plus you are within walking distance of Chinatown, so this suburb really is ideal for those who like to be in the heart of the action.
